Engagement Session Tips: How to Pose and Feel Comfortable in Your Photos
An engagement session with me isn’t about performing for the camera or forcing a moment to happen. It’s more like quality time together, with me there to document it.
Throughout our session, I’m looking to see what you’re like when you’re simply being yourselves. My goal is to capture how you connect with each other during this exciting chapter of your lives.
Think about how you can bring in elements of your relationship into the session. Share a drink, make coffee together, walk your dog, play a game, or talk about a favorite memory. Laugh when something feels funny. Pause when something feels quiet. When you’re present with each other, the photos naturally reflect that closeness.
You Do Not Need to Know How to Pose
Most couples tell me they’re nervous for their session because they don’t know how to pose. That’s totally ok and normal! You’re not expected to show up knowing what to do with your hands, or how to stand. Leave that to me.
I’ll guide you with cues rather than stiff poses. Things like walking together, leaning into each other, or reacting to what your partner says. This gives you something to do, which helps you forget about the camera and focus on each other instead.
If something feels awkward, that’s okay too. Awkward moments often turn into laughter, and laughter always photographs beautifully.
Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera
One of the easiest ways to feel comfortable is to shift your attention away from the camera. Look at each other more than you look at me. Talk, joke, whisper something only your partner can hear.
The more you engage with each other, the more natural your body language becomes. Your hands relax, the shoulders drop and your expressions soften. These are the moments that feel real and timeless.
Wear Something That Feels Like You
Comfort plays a huge role in how natural you feel during your session. Choose outfits that allow you to move, walk, sit, and be close without constantly adjusting.
If you feel confident and comfortable in what you’re wearing, that confidence shows in your photos. When in doubt, stick to pieces you already love and feel good in rather than something brand new that does not feel like you yet.
Give Yourselves Permission to Be Yourselves
There’s no right way to show love during an engagement session. Some couples are playful and energetic while others might be calm and intimate. Both are beautiful and welcomed.
We’re not here to recreate someone else’s photos or fit into a certain aesthetic. Trust that by simply showing up as yourselves, the moments we create together will feel uniquely yours. No pressure.
